Thanks to todays technology we are able to detect and prevent such things even when we are not there. There are couple types of home security systems from monitored ones, when we have to pay monthly monitoring fee and self monitored systems which do not cost anything per month.

The challenge starts when you add more components to your TVs in the house. You get XBox for your Basement TV, PlayStation 3 for your Living room, Blu-Ray player for the basement and one of the bedrooms, not to mention the brand new Apple TV box you just purchased. The physical connection of the components is relatively easy to do with one wire HDMI hookup. The real problem is when you decide to play PS3 in the Bedroom and would also like to view Apple TV in the kitchen.

There is just too much work involved to move all the components around and makes it very inconvenient. How about a system that would allow you to view any of your HD ready components on any of you flat screen TVs at any time? In other words wouldn’t it be cool to start playing Call of Duty or any other game on your PlayStation 3 in the living room, continue playing in the bedroom and then finish playing in the kitchen?  How about watching the same BluRay movie on couple TVs in the house at the same time? Or streaming the video from your last trip you took with the family to your basement TV and your Living Room TV at the same time?

The solution? Matrix Switcher.

Matrix switcher is a device that routes multiple audio/video sources to multiple outputs at any time. Matrix switchers with HD 1080p capability are not the cheapest devices on the market. With prices in the upper $1500 for a 4 in and 4 out system many people simply pass on the idea.

I recently completed a job for my customer and installed 2 flat screen TVs. One in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. There are total of 4 TVs in the house and all the components are wired into a central location in the closet. I mounted the TVs on the wall and ran 50FT HDMI cables throuh the attic. All the components located in the room included 4 cable boxes, PS3 and  Apple TV.

I was asked by my customer to see if there was a way to design a system that would allow him to view any source on any TV at any time. The first thing that came to my mind was the matrix switcher as the only way to make the system work and make it easy for the customer at the same time. The problem was the price and the amount of labor involved in rewiring the house with CAT5 cables, HDMI baluns and other components.

After researching other alternative products, I came across 4:2 HDMI Matrix switchers for relatively small price compared to $2000 units. The units were under $150 each and provided the same functionality as the 8:8 switchers. The difference was that the expensive 8:8 units were made for whole house distribution using CAT5 which offers greater distances and combined with HDMI baluns and IR repeaters the system was a true plug-n-play out of the box unit that was user friendly after the installation.

To meet the requirement of the project I designed a system that included 2 4×2 HDMI Matrix switchers, 2 1×2 HDMI Splitters and a dozen of HDMI cables of various lengths.  The total hardware cost was much lower and offered the same basic idea: any source, on any TV at any time.

Look at the diagram on the left to see how all the components are connected together. Another difference between this custom made system and the actual full size matrix switcher is that the picture from 2 cable boxes will be shared on 2 out of 4 TVs so TV in the living room will not be able to output the picture of box number 1. This was done only because there was no real need in sharing the cable picture on all 4 TVs as each box will have the same programming.

This kind of setup allows any TV to share cable picture, PlayStation3 picture and Apple TV picture on any TV in the house via single HDMI cable. Since the 1:2 switches constantly send signal to the switchers, the only thing that has to be controlled is the 4:2 matrix. The operation should be relatively easy especially with programmable RF remote such as Logitech 890 or similar.

The job is not scheduled to be installed until end of this week or beginning of next week as I’m waiting for all the components to come in but as soon as everything is successfully installed, I’ll update you with additional information, before/after pictures and notes.

The bottom line is that this kind of system is much cheaper compared to full blown Matrix switchers and is also better than buying 4 PS3 consoles and 4 Apple TV boxes.
